Gallery Sumire was established in 2006 as a gallery specializing in frescoes created by the Italian company Mariani Affreschi.
The name “Sumire” (violet) comes from a flower cherished by the ancient Greeks as a “symbol of the reborn earth” and represents “sincerity.”
In Japan, too, this flower has been beloved by people since the Manyo era and frequently appears in traditional Japanese poetry such as waka and haiku.
We chose this flower as our name to symbolize the aesthetic sensibilities of the Japanese and the spirit of the Western world, embedding our desire to convey a universal “beauty” that transcends time and culture.
Currently, Gallery Sumire introduces and promotes young artists who, while valuing Japanese traditions, are not bound by them, creating a new Japanese culture and sharing their works both domestically and internationally.
